This is a clinical analysis of 108 patients with fistula-in-ano, which were treated at the department of general surgery of Dae Han Hospital from January, 1988 to December, 1990.
The results were as follows;
1) Of 514-cases of anorectal disorders, the patients of anal fistula were 108 cases, 21.8%.
2) The male to female ratio was 4.4 : 1 and the majority of patients were in the third to fifth decade of life(75.1%).
3) The cause of fistula was previous perianal abscess in 86 cases(79.6%), sequele of the sclerosing agent injection in 8 cases(7.4%), tuberculosis in 3 cases(2.8%), and unknown cause in 9 cases(8.3%).
4) The duration of illness was less than 1 year in 69 cases(63.9%).
5) The clinical manifestations were purulent discharge in 102 cases(94.9%), pain in 61 case (56.5%). Anal discomfort in 57 cases(52.8%) and itching sensation in 23 cases(21.3%).
6) Associated medical disese was pulmonary tuberculosis in 10 cases(9.3%), and anal disease was hemorroid 17 cases(15.7%).
7) The type of fistula was intersphincteric in 75 cases(69.4%), transsphincteric in 26 cases(24.1%), suprasphincteric in 5 cases(4.6%), and extrasphincteric in 2 cases(1.9%).
8) The location of the external opening was posterior in 46 cases(42.6%), and the majority of patients had one external opening(88.0%). The internal opening was not able to identify in 9 cases(8.3%).
9) The operative procedure was fistulectomy in 91 cases(84.3%), and fistulotomy with currettage in 17 cases(15.7%).
10) The postoperative recurrence was 5 cases(4.6%).
